Cironnup Kamui Iomante

Life and Death, Two Sides of the Same Coin

The Ainu ritual of sending the spirit of the fox, Cironnup Kamui Iomante, was recorded in 1986 in the film Cironnup Kamui Iomante (Director: Minao Kitamura). It is said to be a fantastic ritual that few people, even the Ainu people, know about. This precious video record capturing the Ainu worldview lying deep in time was completed as a documentary work in 2021, after 35 years of work.

For the release of the film, Iwata Design Studio produced various graphic tools such as pamphlet, website, flyer, and preview card. Those who forgo and those who are forsaken. The living (the elder who presides over rituals) and the dead (the fox). The key visuals of life and death are the two sides of the same coin. The pamphlet is designed with the front and back covers in color and black and white, inverting the relationship between life and death.
