An no Wa (The Circle of An)

The Soul of the Shop Resides in the An

After honing his craft at renowned establishments such as "Ukyo" and "Miyagawacho Suiren," pastry chef Mr. Matsumoto opened his own Japanese confectionery shop in Sengawa, Tokyo. It is often said that "the soul of the shop resides in the An (sweet bean paste)," as crafting the perfect An is considered the most vital and challenging task for any wagashi artisan. With this craft at its core, the shop honors traditional craftsmanship while exploring new possibilities for Japanese sweets that harmonize with Western styles, such as coffee and tea.
Iwata Design Studio is responsible for the overall brand identity, including the logo, shop cards, business cards, packaging, stickers, and noren (shop curtains).

About the Logo

The logo is inspired by a single azuki bean—the origin of all An. It represents a world of wagashi that bridges East and West through the Shippo (Seven Treasures) pattern. This traditional Japanese motif also possesses a geometric, Western aesthetic, reflecting the shop’s unique fusion of styles.

Rough Design Concepts

Beginning with a single azuki bean, the design process explored the concept of that bean expanding into ever-widening circles. We underwent numerous iterations and prototypes to arrive at the final logo, capturing the essence of growth and continuity.
