Azumaya Preservation and Utilization Plan: HIGASHI DE AERU

Creating a Hub for Exchange Rooted in History and Culture

The Azumaya, an Edo-period merchant house located in Miyako City, Iwate Prefecture—the easternmost point of Honshu—is the heart of this initiative. The Azumaya Preservation and Utilization Plan (HIGASHI DE AERU Project) aims to transform this historic structure, formerly the Azumaya Brewery (a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property), into a vibrant hub for cultural exchange.
The project is built around several core themes:
* Providing cultural content centered on a theater to attract visitors from outside the region.
* Offering Sanriku "shoku" (cuisine) and hospitality as a form of sophisticated local culture.
* Hosting markets that recreate the charm and bustle of a port town alongside traditional performing arts.
* Providing a "old-meets-new" stay style (such as Farm-stays and Seaside-stays).
Specifically, the plan includes a guesthouse, theater hall, market, shared kitchen, and the restoration of well water. Iwata Design Studio was responsible for the overall graphic design throughout the planning phase, including the logo, signage, and product packaging.

ロゴについて

About the Logo

ロゴマークは「東」の古代文字をモチーフに。文化や人の交流拠点として、交差線の折り重なったデザインに仕上げています。

The logo motif is based on the ancient character for "East" (東). To symbolize its role as a hub for culture and human interaction, the design features a series of overlapping and intersecting lines.

呼び水プロジェクト

The "Yobimizu" (Priming Water) Project

As part of the initiative to restore the well located in the Azumaya parking lot, the "Yobimizu Project" was launched. The goal is to utilize the well as a community gathering spot and a vital water source for disaster prevention. Iwata Design Studio has handled various design elements for this project, including the crowdfunding landing page and the logo for the restored well, known as the "Akashi Well."
