Taku Ohashi Photo Exhibition: Hito to Hikari (People and Light)
Two Ways of Encountering Death
A photography exhibition by photographer Taku Ohashi exploring the theme of human death. The works depict two contrasting episodes— a peaceful death at an advanced age and a suicide attempt — capturing the ways in which people close to Ohashi experienced death, based on his own personal encounters.
Iwata Design Studio handled the project comprehensively, from exhibition design and writing the accompanying interpretive text to graphic design for the direct mail and pamphlet.
Exhibition Design
The exhibition space was designed as a two-sided composition: one wall (Side A) presenting a peaceful death at the age of 92, and the opposite wall (Side B) focusing on a suicide attempt. While the photographic works were primarily monochrome, yellow — representing “light” — was introduced as a key color and strategically placed to guide viewers’ visual movement through the space.

Pamphlet & DM
Mirroring the exhibition layout, the accordion-fold pamphlet was designed with two sides—front and back—each conveying one of the two contrasting forms of death. The title logo and the essay printed on the front of the DM were arranged so that they can be read as both horizontal and vertical text, relating this dual readability to the idea that life and death can be interpreted along two axes.
