The University of Tokyo: Documentary Fieldwork on Urban Life

Visiting Lives Rooted in Place

Students travel to regional communities to encounter the everyday lives of people who live there. They sometimes spend nights together with local residents, help with their work, and experience daily routines firsthand. Through these encounters, the students produce interview-based narratives that document individual lives and local knowledge.
In other cases, students develop their own research themes—such as “The World of Tosa Washi Paper” or “Contemporary Maritime Transportation.” Based on these themes, they travel through the region conducting interviews, taking photographs, and ultimately producing small magazines that present their field research.
Iwata Design Studio participates in this fieldwork program at the University of Tokyo by giving lectures to students, conducting photographic documentation, and designing and editing publications that compile the students’ interview-based writings.

Kochi Edition: SAIKŌCHISIN

The interview articles written by the students are compiled into a single book. The publication opens with a prologue by the supervising professor and a photographic section shot by Iwata, which serves as a visual introduction to the region. From there, the book unfolds into a series of narrative pieces that document the lives and stories recorded by the students during their fieldwork.

Nanjing (China) / Miyako (Iwate) Editions

For the Nanjing edition, on-site photography was conducted locally.
For the Miyako edition, Iwata Design Studio designed a website compiling the students’ interview-based articles. A printed booklet was also produced as a digest version of the project, presenting selected texts and photographs in a concise editorial format.
